Castle Crashers is Top Xbox Live Arcade Game of ‘08

A lot happened in 2008 on Xbox Live Arcade, Microsoft’s online game shop for Xbox 360. Critical darling Braid tweaked everyone’s brains with time-bending puzzles and an emotional twist. A Kingdom for Keflings put the recently-unveiled Avatars to work, letting players use their virtual personas to boss around tiny villagers to build a peaceful kingdom. Capcom updated their classic NES title, Bionic Commando, in a major way, adding new dialog and co-op gameplay. And Lionhead tied their Pub Games Live Arcade title to the full retail release of Fable 2, letting players build up their gold reserves before the game was on store shelves.

But once the totals were tallied and the data processed, The Behemoth’s Castle Crashers turned out to be the top-selling Xbox Live Arcade title of the year. From the creators of the indie hit Alien Hominid, Castle Crashers lets up to four players (either locally or online) fight their way across 20 levels of classic arcade-style beat-em-up action, picking up over 40 weapons and unlocking 20 different characters.

Castle Crashers also features a vibrant art style with vivid colors and high-def, hand-drawn characters and just recently received a free title update that fixes some serious bugs and expands on the gameplay. For fans of classic arcade action, Castle Crashers is definitely worth checking out. A free demo is available on Xbox Live Arcade and the full game costs 1200 Microsoft Points, or about $15.
