Need for Speed World Online an Asia-exclusive MMO… for now

When it comes time to test your Massively Multiplayer Online game there’s apparently no better place to start than Asia. Electronic Arts has announced, to the dismay of jealous virtual tuners here in the U.S., that they’ll soon begin testing Need for Speed World Online in Taiwan and Hong Kong, China. “Technical testing” begins in March and there’ll no doubt be plenty of offline days when the servers crap out, but the game’s core concepts will remain the same.Free to play, Need for Speed World Online will give players the most cars, parts, and game modes of any title in the series and throw them all together into a persistant online world (that will presumably reak of hi-octane gasoline 24/7). Once logged in players can take on the world alone or team up with other racers to rise through the ranks, all while dealing with those pesky law-enforcing cops.
As the game continues to evolve in Asia, expect a U.S. release date to materialize. For now we’ll have to be satisfied with the other new Need for Speed properties; Shift and NITRO, both of which are coming to multiple platforms in 2009.
